Strong, Light, Fast, what else is there?
The Zipp 353 NSW are Zipp's lightest tubeless wheelset yet. This top of the line, do it all wheelset is designed for both road and gravel bike racing and are a popular choice among cyclists due to their lightweight design and impressive performance.
Construction and Design
The Zipp 353 wheels are constructed using high-quality materials to ensure durability and maximum performance. The wheels feature a variable 45mm deep carbon fiber rim, which gives the wheels excellent strength and rigidity while maintaining a lightweight design. The 353s have 24 spokes, laced in a 2-cross pattern on the front and rear wheels. This design enhances the stiffness of the wheels while also maintaining a level of compliance that helps absorb shocks and vibrations while riding on rough terrain.
The 353s design incorporates a straight edge rim or 'hookless' on the 25mm internal width, making the transition between the tire and the rim more seamless and aero. You can also run much lower tire pressure with hookless design. Depending on the tire, Zipp recommends mx pressure at 73 psi (5 bar). The hookless rims also have a more efficient resin distribution, which means a lighter wheel. Zipp has a hookless tire compatibility chart for road tires, but most tubeless ready tires over 30c are compatible (if in doubt, confirm with tire manufactuer) The rim features Zipp's 'sawtooth' design making the rim structurally strong but extremely light. One of the nice functional aesthetics is Zipp's 'hyperfoil' dimpled design to allow for a more aero profile and a cool look your riding buddies will croon over.
The Zipp 353 Cognition V2 Hubset is made of aluminum, and includes a newly designed clutch mechanism for quicker engagement, lower friction and improved durability. The hubs are designed with a larger diameter non-drive side, which helps to improve the overall stiffness of the wheels.
Performance
The Zipp 353 wheels have been designed to offer exceptional performance on paved or gravel roads alike, and they certainly deliver. The wheels are incredibly light at only 1255 grams for the set (250lb rider limit). These wheels accelerate quickly and are easy to handle, giving the bike a nimble, responsive feel. The stiffness also allows for efficient power transfer, which means that you can maintain high speeds with minimal effort. You can feel the difference, accelerating easily when climbing or putting in a hard effort to catch the group ahead.
The wheels perform exceptionally well when cornering on gravel surfaces, giving the rider a more stable feel while providing excellent control even when taking sharp corners at high speeds. The compliance of the wheels also helps absorb vibrations and the unexpected hole in the road, enhancing the overall control of the bike.
The hookless, tubeless-ready rims are another key feature of the Zipp 353 wheels. By running tubeless tires, you can reduce the rolling resistance, which means that you can ride faster and with less effort. Tubeless tires also provide better traction, especially when cornering. The rims use a hookless design which allows riders to run low tire pressure and not worry about “burping” a tire in tight turns. This improves control over the rough terrain and smooths out the ride, reducing fatigue for the rider.
Durability
The Zipp 353 wheels are constructed using high-quality materials that are designed to withstand the rigors of gravel racing. The carbon fiber rims are incredibly strong and can withstand impacts and abrasions without sustaining any structural damage.
Maintenance
The Zipp 353 wheels require minimal maintenance, which is a significant advantage for cyclists who want to spend more time riding and less time maintaining their bike. The tubeless-ready rims are easy to install and maintain, and the center locking rotor interface ensures that you can quickly and easily swap out rotors when required.
Price and Final Thoughts
The Zipp 353 wheels are not cheap (MSRP is $2321 for a set), but they are an excellent investment for cyclists who are serious about gravel racing and they have a lifetime warranty. One of riding buddies damaged a rim on a rough descent- sent it bak to Zipp and they rebuilt him a new wheel. This piece of mind definitely makes the investment more palatable.TI've been riding this wheels set with Zipp XPLR 40 tires for 6 months. I love these wheels. one of the best singular investmentsI've ever made for a bike. I use them primarily on gravel surfaces and I can definitely tell the difference between these and other gravel specifics wheels in terms of comfort, control and speed. These wheels are intended to offer exceptional performance and durability, and their lightweight design makes them an excellent choice for cyclists who want to go fast and stay in control on rough terrain while giving you your best day in the saddle.
