The SRAM RED XPLR 13-speed groupset represents a significant evolution in SRAM's offerings for gravel riders, introducing features specifically tailored to meet the needs of this fast-growing cycling discipline. By incorporating innovations and enhancements over previous versions, SRAM has delivered a groupset that is not only high-performing but also highly adaptable for the varied and often challenging demands of gravel riding. Let’s dive into what sets the SRAM AXS RED XPLR 13-speed apart from its predecessors.
New 13-Speed Drivetrain
The most notable upgrade in the SRAM RED XPLR groupset is the introduction of a 13-speed drivetrain. Previously, SRAM’s top-tier groupsets maxed out at 12 speeds, but the additional gear offers a wider range that is ideal for gravel riding. The 10-46T cassette provides a massive gear range, which is essential for tackling the diverse terrain encountered on gravel rides. Riders can customize the gearing with an option for a 38T up to 46T front chainring. The extra gear gives riders more precise control over their cadence, especially on steep climbs and fast descents, making it easier to maintain momentum and reduce fatigue.
Redesigned Rear Derailleur with XPLR Technology
One of the standout features of the new SRAM RED XPLR groupset is its redesigned rear derailleur. The XPLR (Explore) technology in the derailleur is optimized for the 1x 13-speed setup, designed to handle the wider range of the new cassette smoothly and efficiently. This derailleur is built with SRAM's proven wireless AXS shifting technology, with a new mounting system that leverage the T-type design found on its MTB line. This new derailleur mounts directly to the frame getting rid of the old school rear derailleur hangar, allowing shifting under power and much more resilience for the derailleur in tough conditions. Also, the new, stronger clutch mechanism, improves chain retention on rough and uneven terrain, minimizing the chance of chain drops.
Flattop Chain
Another new feature that distinguishes the SRAM RED XPLR groupset from previous versions is the use of the Flattop chain. This unique chain design is narrower, allowing for the extra sprocket while maintaining durability and strength. The best part? compatibility. the new 13 speed drivetrain uses the same spacing as the 12 speed so theres no need for a new chain !
Enhanced Brake Modulation and Control
Gravel riding demands reliable braking performance, and the SRAM RED XPLR groupset delivers with its advanced hydraulic disc brake system. The new XPLR groupset enhances this with improved modulation and control. One-finger braking from anywhere, with less effort. RED brakes require 80% less effort than before when braking from the hoods, and 33% less effort from the drops. More power and less hand fatigue means you’re in control on any surface. This upgrade ensures that riders can manage their speed with greater precision, whether they are navigating tight corners on loose gravel or making a fast stop on a descent.
AXS Wireless Ecosystem Integration
The SRAM RED XPLR 13-speed groupset is fully integrated with SRAM’s AXS wireless ecosystem, which allows for seamless connectivity and customization. This integration means riders can personalize their shifting preferences using the SRAM AXS app, tailoring the groupset's behavior to their riding style and specific gravel needs.
Gravel-Specific Design Philosophy
One of the broader changes reflected in the SRAM RED XPLR groupset is its gravel-specific design philosophy. Unlike earlier SRAM groupsets that were adapted from road or mountain bike systems, the XPLR is built from the ground up for gravel. This includes not just the 13-speed gearing and the durable derailleur but also considerations like the chainring sizes and crank length options tailored for gravel performance. The groupset is designed to provide optimal performance on the varied surfaces and conditions typical of gravel routes, offering the versatility needed to handle everything from hard-packed dirt to loose, rocky trails.
Ride Experience
The SRAM RED XPLR 13-speed groupset is a game-changer for gravel riders, bringing a host of new features and improvements that set it apart from previous iterations. This drivetrain shifts fast and has less chain noise that its predecessors. The additional buttons on the hoods make for very convenient shifting options without having to move your hands. the hood design is more comfortable and support for your hands, The braking is a huge improvement, especially on rough descents. when paired with the new Zipp XPLR bar, the integration of the brakes and bar is next level- its really nice having components that are made to fit together with an improved hood to bar feel that really supports your hands well. The additional gear is nice- I had been running a *ethirteen 9-46T cassette so I was used to the gear range, but the closer gearing with the 13 speed is a bonus allowing riders to find the exact right gear for the terrain and conditions.
Overall
The additional gear, gravel-specific derailleur, Flattop chain, enhanced braking, and AXS integration collectively elevate the riding experience, making this groupset an excellent choice for serious gravel enthusiasts. At 2488 g, RED XPLR AXS is over 200 g lighter than the previous generation. These innovations not only provide practical benefits but also demonstrate SRAM’s commitment to advancing the gravel riding segment with purpose-built technology. For those seeking a high-performance, reliable groupset that meets the unique demands of gravel, the SRAM RED XPLR 13-speed is a worthy investment. sram red xplr rear derailleur
